Marrakech | Morocco

June 2023

Ahhhh… Morocco. I leave this beautiful country with so many emotions. Gratitude. Compassion. Respect. Humility. My soul grew with this latest adventure.

I had a chance to visit Marrakech, Morocco with MyEO Women, an amazing group of global entrepreneurs who have become my tribe in business and in friendship. 100-ish women business owners from around the world gathered at the Sofitel Imperial in Marrakech, Morocco for fellowship and to explore the beautiful tastes, sights and cultures that Morocco has to offer. From traditional tea ceremonies to cooking Tajin to a party in the Sahara desert and hot air balloon rides, this trip was chock full of once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

From a mobility perspective, Marrakech ranks among the least handi-capable countries I have traveled. It simply is not equipped with an infrastructure for those traveling with limited mobility. That said, there was always a helping hand to guide me when the need arose. From the wonderful people of MyEO Women to the rockstar events team at Inspiria, to the Moroccan people themselves, I was humbled by the pure generosity and sense of inclusion I felt with every obstacle I encountered.

As a testament to the graciousness of the people, one day we had the opportunity to visit a rural village. I had a very difficult day navigating the village. It was 110 degrees and the village had rough terrain, lots of hills and lots of stairs. I asked one of the villagers. “How do people with mobility issues get around your village?” His response? “The people. We help our people. It’s just the way it is.” This. This is what the people of Morocco are made of.

If you pack an adventurous spirit and are willing to accept the help of these gracious people, I trust that you too, will enjoy an experience that leaves a smile within your soul.

For this trip in particular, you will gain access to some helpful (and much needed) insights if you plan to visit Marrakech and Morocco with limited mobility.

Here are three bonus tips pulled from our Morocco With Limited Disability Itinerary!

Tip One:  Be very careful when buying oils, spices, medicines and wares in the markets, the goods may not be real. Pharmacies and markets are required to carry and show certificates of authenticity. Be sure what you purchase is real! And be prepared to haggle in the markets, but not the pharmacie (prices are as listed).

Tip Two: If you can’t navigate stairs well, consider bringing a walking stick. They are literally everywhere! But the people will help you and are generous beyond compare.

Tip Three: Call ahead to restaurants and venues and ask specific questions about their accommodations before you book; restrooms can be difficult to navigate and restaurants can be a 20+ minute walk through the Medina on uneven pathways among tons of cars and motorcycles. Shoutout to Mb Marrakech restaurant for being completely mobility friendly! And serving up extraordinarily delicious vegetarian food (they do serve meat and fish as well)!
